Asuu
LATEST information reaching our portal today, disclosed that ASUU is calling for the scrapping of JAMB from Nigeria educational sector.
According to information from the chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, University of Ibadan chapter, Professor Josiah Ajiboye, has disclosed to local media, that the recent obnoxious activities of the Joint Admissions and
Matriculation Board have disclosed that the organization does not holds any credibility and should be scrapped from Nigeria educational sector.
Here’s his word which is quoted below;
“If you want to know, my view on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board’s changed totally, when they made an unofficial decision, planning on reallocating students universities which these candidates choose, and that is a very condemnable act. The simple truth is that the JAMB board took a very wrong decision — and it is a criminal one for that matter. Because this sets aside the right of Nigerians to freedom of choice.
One thing which is clear here, is that for a public institution like JAMB, they should not be a promoter of private establishments.”
The truth is that for the joint admission and matriculation board to have reassigned candidates to private universities, using public funding, is a criminal act and they were lucky they got away with it.
The question is in whose interest did JAMB do that? Many Nigerians have speculated that there is more to the issue than meets the eye.
Many Nigerians have taken to social media, speculating that these private universities’ inducement (to get JAMB to act to their advantage); however, we need to confirm this details.
But going by the argument that in the year 2014, only 2% of the candidates, who participated in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, applied to private universities, subsequently, JAMB was trying to correct that imbalance through re-allocation. Obviously, something is fishy there and it has the hands of these private institution owners.
I won’t be mixing words here or will i be beating around the bush, the truth is that JAMB has lost it it’s credibilitya long ago. The agency has destroyed the dream of many young Nigerians for university education through its actions and inactions, and there are many grievances against this agency.
Many students have been left frustrated and have surrender their ambition to study in Nigeria for university education.
I want the public, and good people of Nigeria to note here now, that the continued existence of JAMB should be determined before her 2016 session, where they’ll become giants which can’t be scrapped.
From past records of agreements between the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Federal Government over the years, the restructuring of the agency, known as the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has always been part of the agreements between the body.
The only issue we’re facing today, is that the successive governments always failed to implement that part of the agreements.
Lastly, i would love to add here, that the University autonomy will not be complete until that omnibus body called JAMB is removed totally from the Nigeria educational sector, before we can grow.
What do you think? Should JAMB be scrapped or should this warning be disregard by the Federal Government.

waec withhold the release of results of candidates in 13 states
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on Monday released the results of the May/June 2015 West African Senior School Certificates Examination (WASSCE) taken by 1.6million candidates. The results revealed that only 39% of exam takers obtained five credits (including English and Math).
The management of the Council, on the other hand, has withheld the release of results of candidates in 13 states who have failed to make payments for their sponsored candidates.
WAEC Head of National Office (HNO), Mr. Charles Eguridu, acknowledged marginal improvement in the performance of candidates and the intervention of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) to give state governments time to settle their bills.
However, in spite of pressure from newsmen, the management has failed to mention or release the names of the 13 states owing the Council, saying opposition parties would hijack the issue – noting that Imo, Delta and Edo states were not part of the debtor states.
According to Eguridu, after a two-week ultimatum given by Council management, six states have fully or partially paid the registration fees of their sponsored candidates, and that the remaining 13 states’ results would only be released when their debt are paid.
His words: ‘’You will recall that when I addressed you on this issue on July 27, 2015, I alerted the nation on the challenges which the Council was facing in Nigeria as a result of this indebtedness, and its adverse effects on our operations. I had stated then that the council may be constrained from releasing the results of government-sponsored candidates of the affected states.
‘’After my pronouncement, a few of the debtor states responded by paying their debts fully or partially; while a few others made promises, indicating their willingness to pay as soon as they are able to do so. Others have not made any efforts in addressing the matter.
‘’After reviewing the situation, the Council has decided that the results of government-sponsored candidates of indebted states would be released if such states endeavour to produce bank guarantees, so that the council will be assured that the fees will be paid. This decision is in appreciation of the general prevailing economic challenges in the country, and in order not to jeopardize the educational careers of the candidates of the indebted states’’.
He revealed that when the results are uploaded today, those of the 13 debtor states would not be included noting: ‘’I sympathize with you journalists on the pressure from your offices to get the names of the states indebted to the Council. If I release the names, opposition parties will take advantage of the issue as a campaign tool.”
Giving a breakdown of the results, Mr. Eguridu said a total of 616,370 candidates, representing 38.68% obtained credit in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics.
Eguridu, however, stated that there was a marginal improvement in the performance of candidates on that score compared to 2014, where 31.28% (529, 425 candidates) obtained the qualifying credits.
On the improvement of results, Eguridu attributed it to stakeholders including schools (especially teachers) who doubled their effort, predicting that in 2016 the performance of candidates would improve by up to 40 per cent.
